Why I built an app to catch phone thieves and protect your privacy

Catching phone thieves, detecting snoops, and scanning for privacy-infringing smart glasses

Guard Eye is an Android app that helps you catch phone thieves. It works like this:

  1. Someone tries to unlock your phone with the wrong PIN, password, or pattern.
  2. Guard Eye silently takes photos with both the front and back cameras, and records HD video with audio.
  3. It then retrieves your phone's GPS location and estimated address.
  4. Finally, all this information is sent directly to your email.
  5. From here on several things can happen:
    • You have a laugh when you see your own confused face in your inbox
    • You now have a photo of your phone thief and can report them to the police
    • You now have proof that your colleague was snooping through your phone and you can confront them with it
    • You detect that someone nearby is wearing Meta smart glasses recording you without consent

I know, it's pretty good! Go ahead and download Guard Eye now, or if you'd like, let me tell you a bit more about it first. Read on!

Why Choose Guard Eye? It goes beyond theft protection.

When I started building Guard Eye, the existing anti-theft apps in the market felt incomplete. Apps like CrookCatcher and LockWatch could take a photo after a failed unlock — but that was about it. I wanted to build something that was genuinely harder for thieves to defeat, and that addressed a new kind of threat too: privacy-infringing wearable devices like Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses.

Guard Eye doesn't just take pictures. It records HD video with audio, captures from both front and back cameras simultaneously, plays an undismissable alarm at maximum volume with a volume lock every 500ms so the thief can't silence it, and shows a fake home screen that tricks thieves into thinking they've unlocked the phone — while secretly capturing even more evidence as they tap on fake app icons.

Guard Eye can disguise itself on your home screen as a Calculator, Weather, or Notes app — thieves won't even know it exists. It can be locked with a pattern so even if someone finds it, they can't open it. It can take multiple pictures for every failed unlock, using both cameras, and send them to your email. It even captures when someone guesses the right password after having failed — so smart thieves who eventually crack your code still get caught. Oh and did I mention Google Drive upload?

But here's what makes Guard Eye truly different: AI-powered snatch detection that uses your phone's accelerometer and gyroscope to detect violent snatching motions, a commuter shield that activates anti-pickpocket protection on buses and matatus using proximity sensors and trusted Bluetooth devices, and a Meta Glasses scanner that uses Bluetooth to detect nearby Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses that may be recording you without your consent.

And since people of course don't only use Guard Eye to catch thieves, but also to catch their snooping spouses, children and coworkers who use their phone without permission, Guard Eye also has a great interface for viewing captured photos, videos, and event logs directly in the app. The activity log records every event — failed unlocks, break-ins, snatch detections — with timestamps, locations, and associated evidence.

How it works

Guard Eye uses a special permission called Device Admin to detect wrong unlock attempts right on the normal lock screen. We've then built some sophisticated code to make the app take pictures and record video without showing any preview on the screen. Guard Eye will then retrieve your phone's GPS location and estimated address and send it together with the evidence to your email.

Guard Eye uses Gmail to send emails. This ensures complete transparency about which emails Guard Eye sends and where your data goes. During the Guard Eye setup process, you'll be asked to grant Guard Eye access to a Gmail account. You can create a new Gmail account just for Guard Eye or use an existing one (you can also use Guard Eye without email). Guard Eye only requests permission to send emails and cannot read, delete or modify any emails in your account. Guard Eye does automatic image compression based on your network speed to ensure emails are sent as fast as possible, while keeping quality as good as possible.

For snatch detection, Guard Eye continuously monitors your phone's motion sensors when armed. The AI analyzes accelerometer and gyroscope data in real-time, looking for the distinctive jerk patterns of a phone being snatched. When detected, it immediately triggers the alarm and begins capturing evidence — even before the thief has a chance to lock the screen.

The Meta Glasses scanner works by periodically scanning for Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) devices that match the signatures of Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses. When a pair is detected nearby, Guard Eye sends you a discreet notification. No data is collected about the glasses wearer — it simply alerts you to their presence so you can protect your privacy.

Is it all free?

No, but the most important features are free. This includes taking pictures, sending emails with location and photos, SIM change detection, the alarm, break-in detection, boot persistence, hiding notifications, custom email subjects, and the Meta Glasses scanner. The price for Guard Eye Pro depends on your country so you will have to look in the app to see it. But it's very affordable! Considering the price of your phone (and your privacy), I think it's a good investment. Below is a complete list of features in the free and pro versions.

Free PRO

Multi-camera capture

Take photos with both front and back cameras when a wrong password, PIN or pattern is entered.

What if the thief turns on airplane mode or turns off the device?

The first thing a thief typically does after stealing a phone is turn on airplane mode or shut down the device. This prevents Guard Eye from sending emails and tracking your device. So we implemented a feature that tries to prevent this or at least ensure we catch the thief before they do.

When enabled, Guard Eye will immediately turn off the screen if the power menu, quick tiles menu, or notification shade is detected on the lock screen — and while doing so, take pictures and start recording! This cannot prevent the thief from switching off the device by holding down the power button, but chances are they will try the normal way first and thus be caught by Guard Eye!

Additionally, Guard Eye performs a last-chance evidence capture before the phone shuts down, sending whatever it can via email or uploading to Google Drive. When the phone reboots, boot persistence ensures all protection services restart automatically — so Guard Eye is back online the moment the thief turns the phone on again.

Final Thoughts

I started building Guard Eye because I was tired of seeing people lose their phones and having no recourse. Phone theft is a massive problem — especially in crowded cities, on public transport, and in markets. The existing solutions felt incomplete. I wanted to build something that truly made a difference.

But Guard Eye isn't just about catching thieves anymore. With the rise of smart glasses like Meta Ray-Bans that can silently record video and take photos, privacy has become a new frontier. Guard Eye's Bluetooth scanner helps you know when these devices are nearby — because you have a right to know when someone might be recording you.

I hope Guard Eye is useful to you. If you're concerned about phone security and personal privacy like I am, please give Guard Eye a try!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How does Guard Eye affect battery life?

A: Guard Eye only activates during incorrect unlock attempts or when a threat is detected (snatch motion, SIM removal), so battery usage is very minimal. The commuter shield uses low-power Bluetooth sensors. Most users report no noticeable impact on battery life.

Q: Is my privacy protected?

A: Yes! Guard Eye never shares your photos, locations, email address or any other personal information with anyone, not even the developer. All data stays on your device and is sent only to your own email or Google Drive. You can read more about this in the privacy policy.

Q: How does the Meta Glasses scanner work?

A: Guard Eye periodically scans for Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) devices matching Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses signatures. When detected, you receive a discreet notification. No data is collected about the glasses wearer — it simply alerts you to their presence so you can protect your privacy.
